“Write!” Orders Mr. Taft

Don’t write so that you can be understood, write so that you can’t be misunderstood.

Wisely said, Mr. Former President, Sir.

In other words, if you don’t not understand, you have been understood. You should write not so you are misunderstood, but so that you understand others must understand you. Don’t misunderstand me. What I’m saying is, the danger is not that your audience misunderstands what you have not written. The important thing is to write. Understood?

Whenever I find myself nonplussed by a particularly befuddling ordeal or problem, I turn to an American president for advice. I recommend you do the same.
